The Mazury region, also known as the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes is situated around 250 km from Warsaw. The largest of the lakes are the Sniardwyand Mamry. The region is a true paradise for canoers and sailors. There is, however, also enough entertainment for both nature and history lovers. Ruciane-Nida is the ideal haven for sailors. The second one is in Krutyn - a small town in the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest), through which a river of the same name flows. This river, along with several lakes, creates the most picturesque kayak route in Poland. You should visit Wojnowo, where you can visit the fairy tale like cerkiew starowiercow (Convent of the Old believers). The Lesniczowka Pranie is worth visiting. The next town worth touring is Popielno, situated right on the Sniardwy Lake - a lake so huge, that you cannot see the opposite bank. This town is also worth visiting because of its koniki polskie (tarpans) breeding ground. Mragowo is famous for its annual Country Picnic music festival. Mikolajki - the pearl of the region - is situated on 2 lakes - Mikolajski and Talty. The next Masurian holiday resort is the town of Gizycko (Lötzen). Its largest tourist attraction is the Twierdza Boyen (Boyen Fortress). While visiting the region, you must visit Gierloza, to see the Wilczy Szaniec (Wolf's Lair). This is where Adolf Hitler's main headquarters were located during World War II.Ketrzyn - the main attraction of the castle from the second half of the 14thcentury. Another town worth visiting is Swieta Lipka - famous for its sanctuary to St. Mary, and the Jesuit Church and Monastery in one of the most valuable examples of baroque architecture in Poland. The 18th century organs with moving figures are unique. Organ music concerts are played in the summer.
