Since 1989, the environmental situation of Poland has improved, due to decline in heavy industry and a new political will. However, air and water pollution remain serious problems.
With regard to health, Poland is equipped with a rather developped hospital system, with beds and doctors in sufficient number, but the medical sector functions at two speeds. The private clinics, which apply prohibitive tariffs for the majority of the population are much more efficient than the publicly-owned establishments, constrained by budgetary restrictions. A similar situation is found in the education sector.
Health expenditures (2011): 6.7% of GDP
Physicians density (2010): 2.07 physicians/1,000 population
Hospital bed density (2010): 6.6 beds/1,000 population
